Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Devin Thomas scored 21 points on 10- of-11 shooting from the floor to lift the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 65-58 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in an ACC tilt at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Wake Forest (14-6, 4-3 ACC) also received 14 points courtesy of Travis McKie. Coron Williams provided a spark off the bench with 11 points in 22 minutes.
Garrick Sherman paced the Fighting Irish (11-9, 2-5) with 20 points. Eric Atkins chipped in 13 points and six assists while Pat Connaughton posted 10 points and eight rebounds. The loss was the second in a row and fifth in six games for Notre Dame.
The Fighting Irish were limited to just 31 percent efficiency from the field including a 1-of-7 clip from 3-point range in the opening period. Wake Forest took a 25-21 lead into the break after it shot 41.7 percent from the floor in the first half.
The Demon Deacons heated up to sink 56.5 percent of their field goal attempts and also converted 12-of-15 tries at the free-throw line after halftime. Notre Dame managed to take the lead twice, but the hosts answered right back on both occasions and made eight shots at the charity stripe over the final 1:26 to seal the victory.
Despite the loss, Notre Dame outscored the Demon Deacons, 44-30, in the paint and also, 12-4, in second chance points. The Fighting Irish finished 2-of-16 from 3-point range.
