Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Paige led the way with 25 points and dished out seven assists as the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 75-63, in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at the Dean Smith Center.
For the Tar Heels (15-7, 5-4 ACC), winners of four straight, Brice Johnson added 19 points on 8-of-8 shooting with seven rebounds, and James Michael McAdoo chipped in with 12 points and eight boards.
Dez Wells led the Terrapins (13-10, 5-5) with 18 points but committed seven turnovers, while Evan Smotrycz scored 14 and Seth Allen dropped in 11.
UNC scored the game's first 12 points, part of a 19-3 run to open the contest, and went into halftime leading 39-27. The Tar Heels shot 45.2 percent in the first half, including 3-of-10 from three-point range. Maryland struggled from the field before the break, making just 28.6 percent of its shots from the field and 3-of-12 from beyond the arc.
After the intermission, both teams shot the ball well, with the Terrapins connecting on 50 percent and the Tar Heels draining 55 percent of their field goal tries. UNC was able to hold off Maryland down the stretch, despite shooting just 11-of-22 from the free-throw line in the second half.
The Tar Heels dominated the glass, outrebounding the Terrapins 40-32. UNC converted 16 Maryland turnovers into 19 points. They also had the edge in bench points, 19-8.
