Ward plays hero in Merced College softball win

Freshman Sarah Ward delivered twice late for the Merced College softball team, tying Tuesday’s 7-6 victory over Modesto with a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh and then walking the Lady Devils off with a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Sarah Ward didn’t shy away from the big moment on Tuesday afternoon.

In fact, the Merced College freshman seemed to embrace it wholeheartedly.

With the Lady Devils trailing Modesto Junior College by three in the bottom of the seventh and down to their last two outs, Ward tied the game by belting a line drive over the left field fence for her first career home run. The Turlock High grad wasn’t done, however, walking off MC one inning later with a run-scoring single to seal the 7-6 victory.

Ward finished 3 for 5 with a career-high four RBI.

Sarah Ruiz (2-2) picked up the win with three innings of relief. The sophomore allowed two runs on four hits, but limited the damage in some bad spots that her defense put her in.

Sam Murphy and Jahnessa Anderson-Lopez also picked up three hits for MC (5-6) in the victory.
