Los Banos High senior Alexis Barcellos inked her college decision on Tuesday, signing an NCAA national letter of intent to play tennis for Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock.
Barcellos, who won the Western Athletic Conference individual title the last two years and compiled an 89-12 record in four years of varsity play, will attend Stanislaus on a partial athletic scholarship.
“I went on the recruiting trip there, and the biggest thing for me is the team,” Barcellos said. “I really like the team and the coach. ...They’re all from the area, so they all know the place. They’re very welcoming, and they made you feel comfortable.”
Barcellos is a three-sport athlete at LBHS, with four all-league selections in tennis, two in basketball and one so far in softball. She said CSUS coach Verek Visaraga made an impression on her.
“He’s willing to teach me and work with me, and he thinks I can be really good by my junior year, she said. “It’s nice knowing he has confidence in me that I probably don’t have in myself.”
As far as the step up from high school competition to the college level, Barcellos feels she’s ready.
“I watched them play San Francisco's Academy of Art, and they were all foreign exchange students, and they were all really good,” Barcellos said. “I want the competition.”
