Abraham Alvarado decided to extend his trip to Oregon for at least one more day.
The Atwater alum and Stanislaus State star finished fifth in his opening heat of the 800-meter race at the 2016 U.S. Olympic track and field trials on Friday afternoon. Alvarado’s time of 1:47.17 was the fifth fastest of the afternoon, advancing him into today’s semifinals at the University of Oregon. The top three finishers from each heat advanced along with the next four fastest times.
Alvarado was by far and away in the fastest heat of the day, with six of the eight participants moving on, including the afternoon’s pace setter in Boris Berian (1:46.03).
Sixteen runners move on to the semifinals, which will take place at noon today, with the top eight advancing to Monday’s championship race and a trip to the Rio Olympics up for grabs.
