The body of a missing Merced County man who disappeared in the Pacific Ocean on March 26 was found in the surf at Fort Funston in San Francisco on Friday evening, the Pacifica Police Department said in a news release.
The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body as Tyler Dean Collins, 28, of Dos Palos who had been missing since last month after swimming at Rockaway Beach in Pacifica, nearly 10 miles south of where the body washed up.
Pacifica police said officers were notified by the U.S. Park Police around 5:40 p.m. that a person walking a dog had spotted the body.
Collins and friends were staying in a hotel near Rockaway Beach on March 26 when he and another person went for an overnight swim. They were roughly 50 feet offshore when the other person noticed that Collins was missing.
Police, firefighters and the U.S. Coast Guard responded for the search of Collins around 4:20 a.m. that day. Crews suspended the search just before 8 p.m. the same day, but Collins’ family paid for a private helicopter and boat to continue searching.
