Driver strikes baby, leaves scene in late-model pickup

PLANADA -- California Highway Patrol officers are seeking a hit-and-run driver in connection with a Thursday night accident in which a 1-year-old boy in a stroller was struck as he and his mother and older brother were crossing the street.

Daniel Guillen was airlifted to the University of California, Davis Medical Center with major injuries following the 7:05 p.m. accident at Fremont Street, according to Officer Shane Ferriera with the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers are seeking a heavyset Hispanic man driving a white late-model pickup who struck and dragged the boy and his stroller about 100 feet.

Ferriera, CHP public affairs officer, said Gloria Guillen, 36, of Planada and her 8-year-old son Fernando were walking across Fremont Street with the toddler when the truck made a high-speed left turn onto southbound Fremont in the path of the stroller.

Witnesses said the driver of the pickup went through a stop sign on Broadway, made a right turn onto Brodrick Avenue before going through the Fremont intersection.

Anyone with information about the driver or the accident is asked to call Officer Luis Lara at 356-2900 or 356-2956. The truck may have minor front end damage, Ferriera said.
