One dead, four injured in two-car collision

LOS BANOS -- A 46-year-old Mendota man was killed Thursday morning when the car he was riding in collided with a cotton truck at Henry Miller and Turner Island roads near Los Banos, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Manuel D. Larreynaga was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7 a.m. accident. The driver of the car, Federico Abad, 26, of Mendota, and three other passengers were taken to Los Banos Memorial Hospital with moderate to major injuries.

Officers said Abad was northbound on Turner Island Road and stopped at the stop sign but drove his 1998 Saturn into the path of the truck. The driver of the truck, Manuel Jorge of Los Banos, was uninjured. The truck was westbound on Henry Miller Road going about 50 mph and couldn't brake before the collision.

The passengers were Jose Luis Garcia, 21, Roberto Diaz, 18, and Jesus Avalos, 34, all of Mendota. Garcia was airlifted to Memorial North Medical Center in Modesto.
