Jimmy Brewer could do without the long break.
Brewer's Atwater soccer team hasn't played a game since winning the Central California Conference championship a week ago with a 2-0 victory over Buhach Colony.
The Atwater coach hopes the layoff won't effect his team when they open the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs against Downey (10-5-4) tonight at Falcon Field at 7 p.m.
"It's tough waiting a week," said Brewer, whose team is 19-2-5 this season.
"It's a long layoff and you never know what that's going to do. We played two pretty good games last week against Merced and Buhach.
"Our confidence is pretty high right now."
Experience will also be on Atwater's side.
Eleven players are back from last year's team that reached the semifinals.
"Our experience was evident against Buhach," Brewer said.
"We have a lot of guys that have been in this situation before. They've played in important games with a lot of emotion."
Buhach Colony (15-3-4) will begin the playoffs on Friday against Modesto at 3 p.m.
The Merced and Golden Valley girls didn't get easy draws in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.
Golden Valley -- which finished third in the CCC -- will open against Davis of Yolo on Friday at 1 p.m. at Johansen.
Merced will face Modesto Metro Conference champion Johansen at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, the Golden Valley boys open the playoffs against Davis of Yolo at 1 p.m. at Johansen.
