Victim of Highway 99 crash identified

Xingxu Vang, 53, of Planada has been identified as the man killed Tuesday morning when his car was struck by a big rig on Highway 99 at Plainsburg Road.

Officer Shane Ferriera, spokesman for the Merced Area California Highway Patrol office, said Vang died at the scene of the 7:16 a.m. accident on the fog-shrouded highway where visibility was 150 to 200 feet. His 1997 Acura Integra was crossing northbound lanes of Highway 99 to turn south on the highway when it pulled in to the path of a 2004 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by Fortunado Silva, 38, of Livingston.

The front of the big rig, northbound at 45 mph, collided broadside into the driver's side of the Acura. The truck continued into the center median and came to rest partially blocking the southbound lane, Ferriera said.
