Merced's sixth man punishes Los Banos

If the Central California Conference handed out a sixth-man of the year award, Dalemesha Hill would be the early-season favorite.

The Merced junior came off the bench to score 12 points, pull down 15 rebounds and grab three steals in a 67-38 win over Los Banos on Thursday.

That performance came two days after hauling in another 15 rebounds to go along with 8 points and 7 blocked shots in a win over Pitman.

"I really don't know what's got into me," Hill said. "I try to get in there and make sure the rebounds are mine."

Hill and 6-foot-2 center Karine Meyer give Merced a very formidable one-two punch in the post.

Despite battling foul trouble, Meyer chipped in with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

"We switch off," Hill said. "Whoever is in the lineup is going to play hard.

"Neither one of us is going to go easy."

The twin towers helped offset Los Banos center Brooke Silva's 22 points.

Merced (3-0 CCC, 11-6 overall) was just too deep and too fast for Los Banos.

The LB guards struggled getting the ball up the floor against Merced's frantic full-court pressure.

When Merced wasn't pounding the ball inside, it hurt Los Banos from outside.

Alyssa Wright sank four 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 16 points.

Wright hit two straight treys to help Merced open up a 30-16 lead midway through the second quarter.

"Alyssa Wright was hot tonight," said Los Banos coach Mike Perkins, whose team dropped to 1-3 in the CCC.

"She hit some big shots that separated the game. Merced is deep and obviously, we're not that deep."

Raschel Blackwell rounded out Merced's quartet of double-digit scorers with 15 points to go along with six steals.

The win sets up a showdown with Turlock on Tuesday in Merced.

"Turlock is going to be tough," Merced coach John Bliss said. "They have two players who are as good as anybody in the league, and they have good role players around them."
