Livingston girls win WAC title

LIVINGSTON -- Olivia Andam spent most of the night playing the role of a cheerleader.

Three first-quarter fouls forced the Livingston senior to spend the bulk of her Monday night parked on the bench.

Meanwhile, her teammates were battling Patterson with a Western Athletic Conference championship on the line.

"It was so hard," Andam said. "I had so much adrenaline. I was ready to get in there, but my coach made the decision to save me for later in the game."

Good decision.

Andam gave Livingston its first lead of the game with a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter before fouling out less than a minute later.

Her teammates held on defeat Patterson 47-43 to win their second straight WAC championship.

"It's a lucky shot for me," Andam said. "It felt good when it left my hand."

Livingston (12-2 WAC, 19-4 overall) overcame a seven-point halftime deficit despite using only seven healthy players -- with both Andam and fellow starter Ashlee Thompson in foul trouble.

"It wasn't my dream scenario," Livingston coach Luciana Naldi said. "We used every defense we had and this team did everything they could to fight."

Denise Pulido and Nina Garcia both scored 12 points apiece for Livingston.

Andam hit her trey with 2:22 left in the game to give Livingston a 40-38 lead. She finished with 10 points.

Garcia and Pulido helped ice the game with free throws down the stretch.

"It was perfect," Garcia said. "I'd rather have seven girls playing and two others rooting us on than a full roster subbing in and out.

"It's so much better when you get to do all the work."
