Truck knocks over elderly pedestrian

Police are seeking a hit-and-run motorist whose pickup struck a shopping cart in the Lowe's parking lot Thursday afternoon, knocking down a 90-year-old woman. She was not seriously injured.

Lt. Andre Matthews of the Merced Police Department said the driver of a white Ford F150 with a white camper shell struck the woman at 1750 W. Olive Ave. at 12:39 p.m. The woman injured her arm in the fall.

Witnesses said the pickup was driven by a Hispanic man with light brown hair wearing sunglasses. They were unable to get the vehicle's license plate number, and Matthews is hoping those with information will contact the department's Traffic Division at (209) 385-4732.

The woman did not require medical treatment for her arm injuries. She was returning to her car with gardening supplies when the accident occurred, Matthews said.

Pedestrians should be extra cautious when using crosswalks and walkways at shopping centers. While pedestrians have a responsibility to use caution, they always have the right-of-way, Matthews cautioned.
