Wes Borba's mantle is starting to get pretty crowded.
A month after the Merced College baseball team's disappointing first-round exit from the Northern California regionals, the sophomore catcher is still bringing in the awards.
With the Central Valley Conference MVP already to his name, Borba was named the team MVP and an All-American.
"It just shows what a great season Wes had," MC coach Chris Pedretti said. "He has excellent baseball ability, but what sets him apart is his great attitude."
The combination has offers from four-year schools flooding into Borba, but he isn't the only Blue Devil garnering attention.
Starting pitcher Brian Gilbertson has taken his fair share of hardware, adding All-American honors and the team's outstanding pitcher award to his CVC co-pitcher of the year.
Right fielder Bryan Abrey earned All-NorCal honors for the second straight season, just missing out on an All-American nod.
"Having two All-Americans on one team is pretty rare," Pedretti said. "And Bryan probably just missed out by a vote or two.
"The sophomores were just a special group of guys. It's going to be one of the toughest groups to say goodbye to."
