Swimming with heavy hearts: Buhach Colony water polo players keep injured teammate in thoughts

LOS BANOS -- Eric Baker's swim cap hung from the Buhach Colony bench.

Each one of his teammates wrote Baker's No. 8 on their chest.

It was their way of making it clear their injured teammate was still part of their water polo team.

With Baker still in their mind and hearts, Buhach Colony High School returned to the pool Tuesday with a 10-6 win over Los Banos.

Meanwhile, Baker -- who suffered head and neck injuries while diving into the shallow end of a pool during a tournament Saturday -- is awaiting surgery to have two vertebrae fused together at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

"We wanted to win this game for him," Buhach Colony's Brandon Torres said.

"We know he's still rooting for us."
