December 9, 1958: Engineering work is underway for street lighting downtown Merced. The proposed work will cost an estimated $96,000. The Merced City Council has agreed after months of consideration to move forward and enact the three following items. City fund contribution of $50,000 if the additional $46,000 is assessed to the benefiting property owners, authorized a detail plan of lights and an assessment plan by the city engineer, and to install mercury lights over fluorescent.

Volunteer firemen recalled a lifetime of service to the community and explained that although fighting fires was always the volunteers’ basic purpose, serving the community was also one of their goals.

SAN JOSE CITY TOUGH CHALLENGE FOR MC WOMEN

Merced College women’s basketball team has a lot to think about concerning the contest against defending state champion San Jose City College. Twice defeated by the Jaguars the Blue Devils’ coach is more confident this time around. Previously injured players have been cleared which will give them a fighting chance.
