Golden Valley girls run on empty

No games.

No practice.

Chris Tufts doesn't want to see his girls near the gym today.

The Golden Valley girls basketball coach feels his team needs a break after playing six games in five days.

Tufts watched his girls tire out in the second half as Clovis East rallied for a 61-52 win Tuesday night.

"It was our first home game in that stretch of six games," Tufts said. "We kind of ran out of gas.

Golden Valley (5-5) watched as Clovis East erased an eight-point halftime deficit with a 15-2 run to start the third quarter.

Turnovers on offense and sloppy defense sealed GV's fate.

"Clovis East just made better adjustments than we did at halftime," Tufts said.

"It's not the girls' fault. It's my fault. I need to do a better job of doing my homework."

Golden Valley had all the momentum in the first half.

Porsha Grayson and Becky Morris led the way as GV took a 30-22 lead into intermission.

Grayson finished with 17 points and Morris scored 16.

However, the offense went cold in the third quarter.

"We didn't come out strong in the second half," Grayson said.

"We didn't put a body on anybody. Our defense was sloppy."

Clovis East's Jasmine Cooper and Kim Pree combined for 13 points during the third quarter.

Teammate Erikka Banks led all scorers with 19 points, despite playing in foul trouble for most of the game.

"We play great defense for 14 to 16 seconds," Tufts said. "It's that last 10 seconds that gets us.

"We blow an assignment and give up an easy basket.

"Offensively, we're averaging 16 to 18 turnovers and that's too much."

GV has 10 days off before the Tracy tournament.

"We get a break," Tufts said. "Ten games in and we're 5-5. It's not quite where we want to be.

"But it's a new system and we'll get better."
