Golden Valley boys grind it out

TRACY -- A little hustle goes a long way.

A sluggish start had the Golden Valley boys basketball team facing n early six-point deficit.

It was a first quarter that saw GV players settling for 3-point shots and watching Tokay score easy layups.

"We have to find consistency," Golden Valley senior Alex Fletcher said. "As long as we play hard, everything else falls into place."

It did.

Fletcher and company picked up the pace and defensive pressure in a 61-53 win in the first round of the Tracy Holiday Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night at Merrill West.

"We talked about taking the ball to the basket in the second half," said GV coach Keith Hunter, whose team improved to 7-1.

"The driving lanes open up when teams get tired. They don't react as quick."

Fletcher and John Sykes carried the offense during the sluggish first half.

The two seniors combined for 22 of GV's 31 points.

Fellow senior Donte Scott carried the baton in the second half, scoring 10 of his 14 points.

Golden Valley outscored Tokay 16-8 in the fourth quarter to finally pull away.

Sykes finished with a game-high 18 points and Fletcher added 15.
