Le Grand's supporting cast catching on

LE GRAND -- It wasn't too long ago that a four-point opening half out of Jennifer Hansen would have all but doomed Le Grand.

Teams were more than happy to double, triple and sometimes even quadruple team the Le Grand star, challenging her teammates to beat them.

On Monday evening, Hansen's teammates showed why that ploy may no longer be viable.

Hansen opened the game with an unusually cold hand, but Veronica Moreno and company picked up the slack.

Moreno scored 14 of her 18 points in the first 16 minutes, helping Le Grand take a seven-point lead into intermission.

That's when Hansen got hot.

The senior scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the second half as Le Grand (8-0) ran away with a 65-34 victory over BC.

"The rest of the team has come a long way," Le Grand coach Danny Crosby said. "It's almost like night and day.

"Veronica (Moreno) and Miranda (Flores) have become legitimate scorers and we're starting to get regular contributions from our post players."

Probably more encouraging for Crosby is that his team beat a Division I school by 31, without playing particularly well.

Buhach Colony (4-3) forced 11 first-half turnovers and managed to keep Hansen at bay early.

"We ran a little triangle-and-two that we'd been working on for this game," BC coach Jeff Rivero said. "I was able to get a little more time out of my seasoned players and we were effective.

"Once we have to get into the bench, it's a bit of a difference."

Aly Gleason (14 points) helped Buhach Colony keep things competitive in the first half, but there was no answer for Hansen in the final 16 minutes.

The senior finished with 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists to round out her evening.

"I had a terrible first half, but my teammates were able to step up," Hansen said. "It's a great feeling.

"It takes a lot of pressure off of me."
