Florida musician adds his touch to Obama gift

Jeff Mosby's artistic touch was sought on a gift for the man elected the 44th president of the United States.

Mosby, owner of Mosby Guitars Inc. in Socastee, added a script mother-of-pearl inlay of Barack Obama's last name to a ukulele made for the president-elect. Obama and his family vacationed during Christmas in his native Aloha State.

"I knew they were supposed to have given it to him before he left Hawaii," Mosby said.

Mosby said officials with Kamaka Hawaii, a ukulele manufacturer in Honolulu, asked him in early October to work on their gift for Obama.

"They said they had a super-rush job," Mosby said. "They told me who it was for."

Mosby said he was sent the fingerboard that would be attached to the neck of the tenor four-string ukulele. Obama's name in script lettering was requested for the end of the fingerboard.

"They sent me the piece to be inlaid with pearls, and that was pretty much it," Mosby said.

The finished craft was mailed back the next day. The inlay comprised two pieces: the "O" and the "bama," which Mosby connected.
