Wrestling: Golden Valley shifts lineup for section duals

SACRAMENTO -- Chopper Mello is using today's Sac-Joaquin Section wrestling team dual championship to give some of his younger wrestlers some big-time experience.

The Golden Valley coach will have one freshman and three sophomores in his lineup.

"We want them to have the experience of being there and maybe it will help us in the future," said Mello, whose team is 22-7.

Vacaville and Elk Grove come in as the heavy favorites to win the Division I championship.

The first round begins at 9 a.m. at Rosemont High school in Sacramento.

"We're not going there to roll over, it's just how it is," Mello said. "We're glad to be going, but we're not going thinking we're going to win it.

"Wrestling isn't like some sports where anything can happen on any given day.

"Your team is your team."

Mello will rest David and Sia Thao.

Sophomores Ben Weber and Austin Bondi will get the start in their place.

Golden Valley qualified for the tournament as the No. 2 seed out of the Central California Conference.

The semifinals are scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m and the finals at 4:30 p.m.

Also making the trip is Western Athletic Conference runner up Hilmar and Trans-Valley League No. 2 seed Mariposa.

Hilmar and Mariposa will compete in the Division V championship.
