Taste of Merced County: Tri-tip dinner benefits Lake Yosemite Sailing Association

The Lake Yosemite Sailing Association will have a tri-tip dinner on Sept. 8 at the LYSA clubhouse on the shore of Lake Yosemite.

Sailboat rides start at 4 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A silent auction will also be held.

Admission is $10 per person. Proceeds from the event will go to purchase new sails for LYSA's youth programs.

Western eatin'

The Merced County Historical Society will have its 17th Annual Western BBQ on Sept. 11 at Lake Yosemite.

The evening will begin with appetizers, including fried calamari with marinara sauce, deviled eggs and sliced marinated beef tongue. Drinks will be on the house.

A silent auction will be held during the cocktail hour, and the live auction begins at 7 p.m.

On the menu for dinner will be slow-roasted, seasoned pork and barbecued beef with sides of bread, fresh marinated tomatoes, salad and Bill Kirby's famous Chuckwagon beans. Dessert and coffee will follow.

Eat, shop downtown

The Merced Downtown Association is currently presenting its Thursday Night Fest.

The event is held from 6 to 9 p.m. each Thursday evening until Sept. 13.

The festivities take place between M and K and Canal streets at Bob Hart Square to 18th Street.

A variety of booths will be on site, in addition to a farmers market. Come meet your neighbors while enjoying fresh food and shopping in downtown Merced.

Tasty competition

Competitors and vendors are wanted for the "Blazin Hog" Competition Barbecue and Zydeco Music Festival.

The event will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Mariposa Fairgrounds. It will pit teams of public safety personnel, private businesses, clubs and groups, and individuals against each other as they vie to prepare the best barbecue in three categories: beef, pork ribs or chicken.

Zydeco music was derived in the south and is a Cajun/Creole blend of rock, blues and country. The "Blazin Hog" will be presented by the John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation to raise funds to support Mariposa County's only hospital.

A gala of food

Catholic Charities will have a Gathering the Harvest Annual Gala at St. Patrick's Hall, East Yosemite Avenue and Mansionette Drive.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 15. Chicken, pasta, salad, drinks and dessert will be on the menu.

Live entertainment will be provided by The Crosstown Traffic.

Admission is $25 per person, and advanced tickets are required.
