GLAAD's new president has Cuban roots

I spent an hour Thursday speaking with former Massachusetts state Sen. Jarrett Barrios, who in September becomes president of GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He talked about growing up a gay Cuban American, among other topics.

''I grew up in a Cuban family, both my mom and my dad, born in Fort Lauderdale, raised in Tampa, Fla.,'' Barrios said. ''Coming out as a gay man in Tampa when I was in high school I guess it was hard, but it was hard, perhaps, for everybody. But a big, loving Cuban family probably made it a little easier at the end of the day.''

Barrios, 40, is president of the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts. He is married to communications and political consultant Doug Hattaway -- Hillary Clinton's spokesman during her 2008 presidential campaign -- and they have two teenage sons.
