A woman suffered second-degree burns on her arms Thursday from a kitchen fire that caused major damage to her apartment.
About 15 firefighters with the Merced Fire Department responded at 11:46 a.m. to the Covington Creek apartments in the 900 block of Loughborough Drive, where they found the apartment in flames, according to Battalion Chief Mark Akers.
The apartment's occupant, 58-year-old Morgan Shaweb, was transported to the hospital. The fire was brought under control by 12:30 p.m. Although no one else was hurt in the blaze, Akers said at least two other apartment units in the complex were damaged.
The fire happened after the woman was cooking in her apartment and a stove burner ignited a plastic container, Akers said.

The fire is the second to happen at the Covington Creek apartments in about one year, Akers said.
