A 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-car collision near Dell Street and East Highway 140 on Thursday, according to the Merced Police Department.
The man was driving a 1993 black Acura Integra eastbound on the highway at an unknown rate of speed.
Witnesses say the driver swerved right to avoid cars waiting to turn left, lost control and subsequently entered the westbound lane of traffic, just after 4 p.m., according to Lt. Bimley West.
Merced police did not release the name of the driver, but said he was Latino. No other passengers were in the car, West said.
The Acura collided with a 1995 blue Ford F-150 pickup that was hauling a 12-foot white trailer. The occupant of that vehicle, a 58-year-old man, was transported to a Modesto hospital in serious condition. A yellow Labrador retriever was also in the truck and had a small scratch above one eye.
Merced police are still investigating the accident and taking witnesses' statements.
