Merced area California Highway Patrol officers stopped and arrested a Merced man over the weekend who was suspected of kidnapping a pregnant woman and her children and driving under the influence.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office alerted CHP on Saturday of a kidnapping investigation, and officers began searching for a gold 1997 Toyota, said CHP officer Moises Onsurez. Deputies told the CHP the suspect was drinking and suspected of kidnapping a pregnant woman and her children.
CHP officers found the car and initiated a stop near V Street and Auto Center Drive in Merced. The suspect pulled over and was taken into custody without incident after he was found to be driving under the influence, Onsurez said.
Candido Estrada, 34, was booked into Merced County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping and DUI. He remained in custody on Monday in lieu of $120,000 bail.
Estrada was jailed in 2013 for public intoxication and in 2014 when his probation was revoked, booking records show.
