The Buhach Colony High School FFA cotton judging team participated in two cotton judging contests recently.
The B team -- Abigail Montague, Emma Miller and Jeremy Leaper -- received first in the seeds and quiz subcontests in the Lunstad Cotton Judging Contest in Hanford last Thursday. They also placed fourth in the reasons and bolls subcontests. Overall, Miller placed third-high individual and Montague placed first-high individual, with Buhach's B team winning first place.
The A team -- Megen Morales, Trevor Surrock, Garrett Morales and Gretchen Montague -- swept all the subcontests. They placed first in bolls, seeds, lint, plants, reasons and in the quiz. The team took top honors overall by placing first with Montague as fourth-high individual, Garrett Morales as third-high individual, Surrock as second-high individual and Megan Morales as first-high individual.
In the 2010 State Finals Cotton Judging contest Saturday at California State University, Fresno, the B team placed second in plants, second in bolls, fourth in lint, third in seeds and first in the quiz. Overall, Miller placed eighth and Montague placed first. The B team ended up in second place in the state in the novice division.
The A team placed first in bolls, seeds and lint. They also placed fifth in plants and third in the quiz. Montague placed fifth-high in the state, Megen Morales placed fourth-high individual in the state and Surrock was second-high individual in the state. The team was the first from the central region to win the contest and the state title.
