Helena Chemical collects 9.5 tons of ag-chem containers

The Helena Chemical Company hosted a collection event for agricultural-chemical containers used by farmers and growers in Merced in mid-November.

The event was a success, with 19,000 pounds, or 9.5 tons, of ag-chem containers collected. The plastic containers ranged in size from one quart containers up to 30 gallon drums. Ag-chem containers consist of herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides that commercial farmers and growers use throughout the season.

The empty containers were shredded on-site. The shredded plastic will be recycled and turned into products such as industrial pallets, new plastic pesticide containers, speed bumps, agricultural drain pipes and other products.-- Carol Reiter
