Weekly crop report shows winter wheat and oat planting continues

A report on crop conditions for Merced County for the week ending Dec. 5 has been released by the Merced County Agricultural Commissioner’s office.

Winter wheat planting is underway. Oat planting continues, and some fields have already germinated.

The cotton harvest is winding down, and new alfalfa planting is almost complete. Almond pruning and orchard removal is underway, and hulling of stockpiled almonds are almost complete.

Radicchio harvest continues. Sweet potato harvest is almost complete. Sweet potato hot bed and field fumigations are underway for next year’s crop.

Supplemental livestock feeding of hay and nutrients continue. The rangelands are starting to turn green after recent rainfall, and cattle are being moved onto rangelands for winter foraging.-- Carol Reiter
