Second UC Merced student tested for coronavirus, awaiting results in self-quarantine
UC Merced announced Wednesday night that a second student showed symptoms consistent with coronavirus (COVID-19), and is in self-quarantine while awaiting test results.
The student is isolated off campus, according to the university.
The first student, an undergraduate, reported symptoms Monday.
UC Merced officials did not comment whether the student was self-quarantined on or off campus, but did say that campus residential space had been designated for ill individuals.
Test results for the first student to show COVID-19-like symptoms should be available by the end of the week, university officials said. The student is being tested through a commercial lab, which typically takes five to seven days to receive results.
The university also announced Wednesday that its May graduation ceremonies have been postponed. Alternative commencement celebrations are being explored, UC Merced officials said.
All classes will be taught remotely through the remainder of the spring semester.
As of Wednesday, March 19, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Merced County.
