A 2-year-old boy lost two fingers in a freak accident Saturday morning involving an overturned shopping cart at a Wal-Mart discount store checkout counter in North Merced.
Lt. Andre Matthews of the Merced Police Department said there were two children in the shopping cart and their movement caused the cart to turn over onto its side and onto the fingers of the 2-year-old child.
Matthews said city firefighters and Riggs Ambulance Service paramedics stabilized the child and recovered his severed appendages. He was taken to the Community Campus of Mercy Medical Center Merced and was to be taken to Children's Hospital Central California in Madera. The child's identity was not disclosed and Madera hospital officials would not provide any information about their involvement in the incident.
Officer Jeremy Salyers viewed store surveillance video and concluded the 11:07 a.m. mishap was a tragic accident. Salyers said the family had finished shopping and was removing items from their basket. The children's mother walked toward the cart but before she could stop the children from moving around, the cart overturned, Matthews said.
