Services scheduled for Merced soldier killed in Iraq

MERCED -- Services for Sgt. Frank J. Gasper will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Tabernacle, 2745 E. Hwy 140. Burial will follow at Merced Cemetery, 1300 B St.

Gasper, 25, was killed by a roadside bomb in Najaf on May 25 during his fourth tour of duty in Iraq.

Gasper's awards include three Army Commendation Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals and a National Defense Service Medal. Gasper was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group in Fort Carson, Colo.

Gasper was a graduate of Golden Valley High School. He is survived by his wife, Breanna, in Fort Carson, his mother and stepfather, Joel and Anita Richards of Planada, and a sister, Victoria Gasper.

Gasper was the 24th soldier or Marine from the Northern San Joaquin Valley or foothills to be killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
