A big rig truck snagged an electrical line, pulling a power pole to the ground near South Canal Street and Childs Avenue shortly after 2 p.m. today, according to Merced police.
The accident has caused power outages in many parts of the city -- including several traffic signals.
PG&E spokesperson Nicole Tam said about 3,085 customers were affected by the downed power pole, although power was restored to about 2,800 customers by 3:30 p.m.
Tam said work on the damage pole and electrical lines will not be completed until 11 p.m. tonight. "There may be additional customers that are reenergized as we continue the repair work," Tam said.
Most of the customers affected in Merced are between H and M streets, north of 19th street, Tam said. Merced Fire Chief Ken Mitten said no one was hurt in the accident.
