Fire damages unoccupied building

GUSTINE — No one was injured Sunday in an early morning fire inside of a vacant building at 1107 Highway 33.Although it was the second fire to happen in the building in about a month, firefighters from Cal Fire/Merced County Fire Department say the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.About 15 firefighters from Cal Fire/Merced County Fire Department, Los Banos Fire Department, Newman Fire Department and City of Gustine Fire Department responded to the scene around 1:30 a.m., according to Cal Fire Engineer Ryan Avila.The fire, which started in the rear interior of the building, was brought under control within 45 minutes. Avila said the damage to the structure is estimated to be about $300,000.The building used to be the home of a karate studio, Avila said, adding that no other structures were damaged in the fire.
