Man dead after crashing into tree in Mariposa County

An unidentified man lost control of his pickup truck on rainy Christmas morning, crashed it into a tree and died, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The man, 21, was traveling before 7:30 a.m. east on Darrah Road west of Montana Del Oro, in the Mariposa area. Neither the CHP nor the Mariposa County coroner identified him, but officers said his truck crossed the westbound lane, ran down an embankment and struck a tree.

The man was wearing a seat belt, officers said, and the truck’s two front airbags inflated. Officers haven’t determined how fast the truck was going, but the force of its collision with the tree killed him at the scene.
