Fresno's Hmong New Year celebrations begin

Hmong New Year's commemoration has started today at the Big Fresno Fair grounds, with visitors from several nations in attendance.

The first day of the seven-day event began with opening ceremonies that included remarks from Gen. Vang Pao, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer and Fresno City Council Member Blong Xiong.

Festivities include traditional events like ball tossing, dancing and singing. Events continue through Jan. 1 at the fair grounds.

Merced's Hmong New Year events were held last weekend at the Merced County Fairgrounds.
