Unknown person sets parked car on fire in South Merced

Someone set a parked car on fire in a South Merced neighborhood early Friday morning, according to police.

The car was parked in a driveway at a house on the 800-block of Emory Court when the fire was set, authorities said in a news release. Investigators believe that whoever started the blaze poured a flammable liquid on the car's roof before lighting it on fire.

"Fire personnel discovered that a suspect arsonist deliberately set the fire," the release said.

By the time Merced police and fire crews arrived at the scene shortly before 1 a.m., the car’s owner, 20-year-old Roland Ochoa, already had extinguished the flames.

No one was injured in the fire, and nothing was damaged besides the car. Police said they haven't identified any suspects.

Anyone with information on the blaze should call Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209)385-4702, or the police department’s anonymous tip line at (209)385-4725.
