A 21-year-old man is in the hospital after his car slid across a slick section of road Tuesday evening and struck a tree.
Abel Medina Yepez, the driver and only occupant of the car, suffered a broken thigh bone in the crash, which happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of M Street, according to Merced Police Lt. Matt Williams.
The road was particularly slippery Tuesday, due to heavy rainfall and hail.
A witness who was driving on M street said that Yepez's gold Mercedes pulled into the lane next to him in order to pass, but the victim's car hydroplaned and he lost control.
Yepez slid into a large tree along center divider of M Street. Paramedics and firefighters arrived shortly after the crash, using the "jaws of life" to free him from the wreck. Yepez was flown to Doctors Hospital in Modesto, where he is listed in stable condition.
Williams said investigators don't believe speeding or alcohol contributed to the crash.
