Merced College said its Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of music professor John Albano, will perform the music of Thad Jones, Earth, Wind & Fire and others on Friday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Merced College Theater.
"We're featuring a variety of compositions that will please the audience, as well as provide a showcase for the many talented musicians in our jazz program," Albano said. "It's an eclectic program and we think it's going to be a memorable concert."
Concertgoers will also hear selections from Mongo Santamaria, Duke Ellington, Michael Buble, Queen Latifa and Johnny Mercer.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $6 for students and seniors. Tickets may be bought at Gottschalk's Music (355 W. Main St., Merced), Passadori's (3rd & Broadway, Atwater), Peraino's Jewelry and Gift Emporium (2844 G St., Merced) and at the Merced College Bookstore. For more information, call (209) 384-6644.
The college also said vocalists from its Chorale and Chamber Singers will take to the stage for their spring 2010 concert on Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, in the Merced College Theater. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the concerts begin at 8 p.m.
Under the direction of music professor Curtis Nelson, the Chorale and Chamber Singers will also be joined by the talents of the Merced Children's Choir, directed by Patrice Stribling Nelson.
"Our spring choral concert will feature music from around the world," Nelson said. "We'll perform songs from Scotland, Italy, Japan, Jamaica, Kenya and parts in between."
Nelson said that three choral ensembles from ages 7 to 77 will share music in English and native languages from around the world."The concert will be a great reminder that not only is music the universal language, but that the joy of making music is truly a global experience," he said.
Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door and may be obtained at the same venues as for the jazz ensemble.
