The California Department of Fish and Game announced that trout opening day is Saturday in most counties.
The department said it's made an effort to stock trout in all accessible waters approved for planting. Lingering wintry conditions could play a major role in how many rivers, creeks, lakes and reservoirs can be stocked before Saturday.
Most lakes, rivers and streams have a limit of five trout a day and 10 fish in possession. In the past, an estimated 10,000 anglers have turned out for the opener, and about 50,000 trout are caught during the first week of the season.
All persons age 16 and over must possess a valid California fishing license. Freshwater fishing licenses can be bought online at dfg.ca.gov/licensing.ols/intro.html or at regional fish and game offices or other authorized dealers.
