Merced College Concert Band plans evening of TV and movie themes

Merced College said its Concert Band will perform "Hooray for Hollywood" in the Merced College Theater Friday, May 21, at 8 p.m.The concert will focus on movie and television theme songs.

"We're featuring music we've all grown up with from television shows, film scores, and musicals," said Concert Band director Mark Doiel. "The audience will surely recognize music from such composers as James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams."

Some of the well-known musical compositions include the themes from “Casablanca,” “Lawrence of Arabia” and other film classics. Concert-goers will also hear music from “Mission Impossible,” “The West Wing,” “Apollo 13,” “The Pink Panther,” “Chicago,” “Braveheart” and several musical scores from Disney films.

"This has been a fun concert to rehearse, and we're sure audiences will love what they hear," Doiel said.

The Concert Band has also scheduled a free public performance at Applegate Park Friday, May 14.

Regular admission tickets are $8 and $5 for students and seniors. Advanced tickets sales are also $5. Tickets may be obtained at Gottschalk's Music (355 W. Main St., Merced), Passadori's (3rd & Broadway, Atwater), Peraino's Jewelry and Gift Emporium (2844 G St., Merced) and at the Merced College Bookstore.
