Merced College commencement to highlight more than 780 students May 28

Merced College will bestow degrees and certificates of completion to 787 graduates during its 47th commencement exercises Friday, May 28, the college said Friday.

A total of 569 associate of arts degrees, 78 associate of science degrees and 140 certificates of achievement in occupational majors will be bestowed.

Six graduates will be recognized with superintendent's honors for carrying a 4.0 grade point average, and 112 graduates will be recogn-

ized with an honors distinc-

tion for having grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.

U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter will give the keynote address.

The 2010 commencement will also feature for the first time three graduation speakers.

Wayne Smith, who will accept an AA degree in physical education, will speak on "The Journey's First Step."

Stephanie Ballard, an honors student who majored in social and behavioral sciences, will speak on "Your Path is Waiting."

Timothy A. Grimes, a history major, will speak on "A New Beginning."

Graduation Idol continues this year with two student performances. Victoria Ortega will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner," and Joshua Cruz will perform Bill Withers' "Lean on Me." Graduation Idol was established in 2008.

Commencement begins at 7:30 p.m. in Stadium '76/Don Odishoo Field.
