Emergency agencies to conduct earthquake training at hospital

Local emergency services agencies will conduct an earthquake training exercise on Sunday as Mercy Medical Center Merced moves patients from its 13th Street location to the new hospital in North Merced.

The exercise will simulate a 7.1 earthquake striking the Central Valley just east of Merced, causing major structural damage to the 13th Street hospital and requiring an emergency evacuation of patients. Participating agencies include the Merced County Office of Emergency Services, Merced County Health Department, Merced County Sheriff's Department, City of Merced Fire Department and Merced Police Department, California Highway Patrol, California Emergency Management Agency and Mercy Medical Center Merced.

The exercise will begin at 6 a.m. and should finish by 1 p.m. Mercy's actual patient relocation will occur independently of the exercise.
