Woman injured in fire near Atwater dies

A woman hospitalized Saturday after being rescued from a house fire near Atwater has died.

The woman, identified as Katherine Martens-Sprinkel, 59, was flown Saturday morning to UC Davis Medical Center, but died later that day, according to the Sacramento County Coroner.

Firefighters from Cal Fire responded to the home in the 9300 block of Sunset Drive around 5:30 a.m. after receiving a report about a woman trapped in a burning home, said engineer Mario Rivera, Cal Fire spokesman.

Martens-Sprinkel was rescued after firefighters broke into the house through the front door. Firefighters found the victim unconscious in the hallway, Rivera said.

Firefighters treated Martens-Sprinkel, who was without a pulse. After administering CPR, firefighters were able to get her pulse back.

Martens-Sprinkel also suffered second-degree burns to her face and abdomen, Rivera said.

The fire destroyed most of the home, causing at least $75,000 in damage. Rivera said the cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation. No neighboring structures were damaged.
