A 33-year-old Delhi man was stabbed to death Wednesday after an argument erupted into violence at an Atwater residence, police reported.
The victim, Eric Gutierrez, was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced and later died, according to Detective Armando Echevarria.
Police went to the home in the 1100 block of Mary Ann Drive around 6:40 p.m., responding to a report of a stabbing. Upon their arrival, they found the victim, as well as the suspect, 26-year-old Manuel Lara, suffering from stab wounds.
Investigators believe a verbal disagreement became physical, resulting in one of the men using a knife. Police haven't released what the argument was about, although Echevarria said there's no indication they'd known one another for a long period of time. "We're still in the middle of interviews right now," Echevarria said.
After being treated for his wounds, Lara was booked into the Merced County Main Jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.
The death is the second homicide case to happen in Atwater within a week. Two people, 47-year-old Pedro Serna and wife Delores Serna, 43, were shot to death Friday at Castleview Apartments in the 1600 block of Bellevue Road.
Police said that case may be a murder/suicide, although a final determination hasn't been made.
