Two boys were shot inside a South Merced apartment complex around 11 p.m. Friday, killing one of them and sending the other to the hospital, Merced police reported.
No suspects are in custody.
Officers responded to the scene in the 900 block of D Street, at the Sunnyside Apartments, according to Lt. Bimley West. Witnesses reported hearing four to five gunshots. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the two victims lying on the ground with gunshot wounds, still breathing.
The victims were shot by one or more people who were on foot, West said. A 16-year-old boy was treated by paramedics and flown to a regional hospital. West said the other victim, a 17-year-old boy, was later pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Both victims are residents of Merced.

West said one of the victims was seated on a playground bench, while the other victim was walking to a residence when the shots were fired. He said the victims were friends.
The suspects left the crime scene either on foot or in a vehicle prior to the arrival of the officers, West said.
The shooting on D Street is not believed to be connected to a shooting reported earlier the same night at K and Main streets, West said.
