Atwater High senior Jose Hernandez wins congressional art competition for Cardoza's district

Jose Hernandez, a senior at Atwater High School, has been named the winner of the 18th Congressional District's Annual Art Competition, according to Rep. Dennis Cardoza's office.

His digital photograph, titled "The Journey," depicts a honeybee pollinating a pink flower blossom. It was selected as the winner by a panel of judges convened by Cardoza that included professional artists and gallery curators.

It will be displayed for one year in the frequently used passageway between the U.S. Capitol and the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, D.C. The annual exhibit represents the combined efforts of members of Congress, students and teachers who encourage their students to enter the competition.

The winner from each congressional district is invited to a Capitol Hill reception in July that highlights their accomplishments in conjunction with the hanging of their artwork, Cardoza's office said in a news release.

"I am pleased to congratulate Jose and recognize all of his hard work," said Cardoza. "Each year my office receives a significant number of entries. I know that this was not an easy decision for the judges with such quality artwork being submitted."
