Amgen crash near Exeter takes out Armstrong

Lance Armstrong was involved in a crash this morning near Exeter and is out of the Tour of California.

In a Twitter post, Johan Bruyneel, manager of Armstrong's Radio Shack team, said: "Sorry to report there was a huge crash, with Chechu [Rubiera] and Lance involved. Lance had to abandon and is going to the hospital for X-rays."

According to tour officials, the crash happened at 10:55 a.m. on Walnut Avenue as it narrowed leaving Visalia and "entering orchard country."

Riders from the RadioShack and Bissell teams were involved. Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer were among those who crashed, but both had got back on their bikes and were working to rejoin the peloton before Armstrong abandoned the race.
