Smell of pot leads to arrests of Merced men in Sonora

Two Merced men were arrested early this morning in Sonora after police allegedly found marijuana and Ecstasy pills in their car, authorities said.

The two 19-year-old men, Joel Guerra and Renaud Freels, were apparently in the area for the Furthur Festival at Mountain Aire in Angels Camp, according to Chief Mark Stinson of the Sonora Police Department.

At about 1 a.m., an officer made a traffic stop on a 1994 Honda Accord in the 300 block of West Stockton St., Stinson said.

The officer smelled marijuana odor from inside the car, and the two men admitted to recently smoking pot. However, they said they didn’t have any inside the car, Stinson said.

During a search of the car, officers found an undisclosed amount of pot and the Ecstasy pills, Stinson said. Ecstasy is a hallucinogen.

Stinson said investigators are trying to determine if there were plans to sell the drugs.

The two were booked into Tuolumne County Jail on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance.
