An Elk Grove woman was killed near Gustine on Sunday night after the car she was riding in blew a tire and overturned on northbound Interstate 5, authorities said.
Lolita Buenviaje, 49, died after she was ejected from the car. She was the only person in the 2005 Chevrolet who was not wearing a seat belt, according to Officer Eric Parsons of the California Highway Patrol.
The driver, Arnel Buenviaje, 46, of Elk Grove, suffered major injuries and was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he was listed in stable condition today.
Three other passengers, including two teenagers, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Parsons said Arnel Buenviaje was driving at approximately 70 mph just north of the Pete Miller Road overcrossing just west of Gustine when a witness said the car began swerving side to side.
The car then veered left, and Arnel Buenviaje lost control of the car, which overturned several times in the dirt and grass near the center median, the CHP said.
The accident is under investigation. Alcohol and drugs did not appear to play a role, Parsons said.
